Simple thoughts, Random ideas and Cletus

Everything about my life

What is important

I have thought a bunch lately about what is important in life. Here are my thoughts on this age old question.

  • Love—love of your family, your children, your friends, and your man
  • Happiness—how you achieve this is up to you; it can be as easy as eating the candy bar with your man; it can be achieving your goals; whatever floats your boat
  • Family—the people who have known you from the get go and will be your most significant source of inspiration ever in your life
  • Health–don’t ever underestimate the value of your health. If you have ever witnessed the wrath of some of the most horrid diseases of this world, you should cherish your health and do what you can to ensure that health will last you a very long time.
  • Friends–the people that you laugh with, the people who see you through when your family is driving you nuts
  • Knowledge—it is true: knowledge is power. The more you know, the more you can do. Use your noggin and soak it up!
  • Challenges—if you live a life without a challenge, you will lead a dull life. Challenges make us who we are and will shape who you become. Embrace the challenges in your life and let them lead you to be a better person.
  • Beautiful art—you don’t have to own expensive art to appreciate it and have it enrich your life. As I write, I am listening to music I downloaded (gasp) and am completely in awe of the talent of the people in this world.
  • Needs that are met—have you ever really stopped and given thanks for the fact that your needs are met? If you think about the sheer numbers of people in our own country that don’t have what they NEED (not want) it is staggering. Even though I myself am struggling to pay my bills, at least I do pay them (and on time, I might add) and have everything I need for myself and my child.
  • Good literature—I told my kids at school today that reading is what opens up the world for you. This is the most stereotypical thing a teacher can say, but it is the honest truth. If you think on the numbers of people that can’t read, it will astound you. Most people take for granted the gift of being able to read. It is the one thing that I can turn to, can use as a retreat when life just isn’t the barrel of apples I thought it would be. I enjoy reading more and more every single day. Don’t take it for granted—read a little, learn a lot! (Ah, I am such a teacher, huh? )
  • Sentimentality—How many of you are as big of a sentimental fool as I am? I know one of the most unsentimental people in the world. I wonder how she can make it through her life happily and love fully. It astounds me! I am very sentimental. I can’t throw away anything for fear that I might forget something or someone. To be sentimental is to be very thankful, I believe for the gifts, either concrete or not, that are given to you each and every day.
  • Laughter—How can you live your life without a good belly laugh every once in a while. Let go. Laugh at the cheesy joke. Roll on the floor dying laughing at good ol’ Janet and JT during the halftime show like Troy and I did. You will be so happy you did….and you burn cals while you are at it!

I think this is a good start. Does it make you think? Does it make you wonder what you find is important in your life? I hope so. Take inventory. Do a mental check. Make your list. I would love to hear all about it.

Take care of yourself and each other. (I can’t remember who says that…)

Much love to you–

Amy

Sunday Seven

What are your life goals??

1. What would you like to learn? Any and everything! I would love to have a second master’s degree, and later on down the road, possibly a doctorate.

2. Who would you like to meet? In an ideal world? The Dalai Lama; otherwise, I would love to meet Ned Hallowell, or at least speak when I saw him again. (I am such a wimp for not speaking when I had the chance!)

3. Where would you like to go? India, Nepal, Mount Everest, South Africa, Italy, California, the Carribean, Central America, Las Vegas (again)

4. Who would you like to spend your life with? Annabelle (and possibly some brothers or sisters for her before I get too old to have any more), Troy, friends, family

5. What would you like to do before you get too old to to enjoy it? See Dave Matthews Band in concert, ride a roller coaster without peeing my pants, travel, dance in the rain, spend a day picking dandelions, just about anything….

6. How important is money in your life goals? Well, money is important in that I would like to have enough to pay off my debts, build a nice house, and make sure that my needs and Annabelle’s are met. Beyond that, no, money is not important in a ‘need a Louis Vuitton bag and 5 carat diamond ring’ kind of way.

7. What is the one thing you couldn’t live your life without in meeting these goals? The love of my daughter, the encouragement of my family, the lifting up that Troy does so well

So, what are your life goals? Interesting to think on, huh?

Have a great Sunday! Love to you all! :o ) Amy

How much more random can you get???

I was told this morning that it was just plain amusing how I come up with some of the stuff I come up with. Yeah, like how wearing man flats and jeans is 53 kinds of wrong. Not all kinds of wrong, or it just wasn’t right, but 53 kinds of wrong. Which makes me think….how much more random can you get?? Hmmmmm…….

1. 3 1/2 times pi kinds of wrong—how you feel when your Reese’s Cups melt in your pocket

2. The human head weighs eight pounds

3. Flat shoes make good ice skates on slick parking lots (found this out this morning)

4. The Red Wings beat New Jersey 5-2 (or something like that)

5. Darrell Green is one of the best if not THE best cornerback in NFL history

6. Michelle Wie was the youngest golfer in the tournament in Hawaii a few weeks ago; at age 14 and around 6 feet tall, she is pretty darn awesome

7. $5.25 purple JLo rings from Claires make you feel like about 1.25 million buckaroos

8. Chocolate cures everything

9. New purses are a good thing (Annabelle loves her new-to-her Hello Kitty purse that I gave her too!)

10. 555 and 1/3 kinds of wrong—paying your bills and having NO money left over to buy a new outfit.

Friday Five

You have just won one million dollars:
1. Who do you call first?  Troy

2. What is the first thing you buy for yourself? After paying off my credit cards….a new house.
3. What is the first thing you buy for someone else? Hmmmm…..a new truck for Troy or a trip for all of my friends and family to somewhere warm and sunny
4. Do you give any away? If yes, to whom? Oh definitely! I would give some to friends and family that need it; then I would give a good chunk to Fuqua School, and some other children’s charities.
5. Do you invest any? If so, how? Certainly! I would invest enough to make sure that Annabelle was taken care of for the rest of her life. I would need to find a good, honest financial planner….I am sure that there are bunches who need a good job!

Have a great Friday! :o ) A

New phones and Vera Bradley bags

Nothing says “I have no money” like a new cell phone and a new Vera bag. Don’t even ask what I was thinking, but now, I feel like a zillion bucks. At least I will look good with my new over-priced purse and my new ‘looking like Spock’ phone. Even though I am still wearing raggedy Target jeans.

On a completely different note, I am a big fan of snow days. We have missed school every day this week. I think we could have gone today, but I am soooo not complaining. I am willing to bet that we won’t go tomorrow either. If we do, talk about a wasted day. You can’t hardly do anything with a Friday. You can’t start a new story, new spelling words, nothing. Oh well. Me, crafty teacher that I am, will think of something in the event that I do have to drag my butt out of bed and go to school. :)

Hope you all are enjoying the snow as much as I am—I have loved staying home with Troy. Nothing is better than napping, eating, and watching TV. Life doesn’t get any better than that. Well, some things make it better, but we are so not going there.

Papa Smurf figures out what doesn’t fit down the potty

I am glad that I have gotten back to my computer after such a hiatus. I just have one thought to share on this very snowy Sunday afternoon. I am so glad that Kevin (my best good friend’s hubby) has figured out that perfume bottles can’t be flushed down my toilet. Hard lesson learned, but it is true. My Papa Smurf (aka, Kev) found this out after doing major surgery to my potty and getting 2000 Flushes Blue all over him and my bathroom. Papa Smurf found this out after three (count them) three trips to Walmart that this is true. Now he, blue hands, jeans, shirt, and other parts too, knows for sure and positive, that four inch long bottles of Calgon body spray won’t go through the little squirrely part of the potty bottom. He does know now, however, how to take the potty apart, how to use a snake, how to successfully use Anna’s toothbrush cup to bail out the potty, how to shop for plumbing supplies, and how to keep a real sense of humor. I just love Kevin. Now Jill has to reside with ol’ Papa Smurf. Ol’ Mister Blue Hands. We told him he could tell his friends that he was touring with the Blue Man Group this weekend. Maybe they will buy that. I doubt it. Now he, professional accountant guy, will have to brave going to work with hands the color of the Caribbean. (The whole reason I buy the blue stuff is so that you will feel like you are in the Caribbean even in bathroom….) I hope that Kevin has learned his lesson, and I really really hope that his hands are not blue in two weeks when we go down to Carolina for the circus, and this one is paramount: I hope that this never ever happens again…..especially to me.

cheap and good

Troy wrote on his blog about how we had the best time at the Roanoke Regional Airport. This is so true. Which made me think: What are other good cheap dates? Here are my thoughts:

1. Airport–for less than four bucks you can have an hour of fun

2. Blue Ridge Parkway–bubbles and scenery….

3. 25 cent wing night–Moe’s is always a good choice….

4. The Jeopardy Showdown–this is only good if you win (I haven’t yet)

5. Football and the cuddling only Todd loves

6. Food Lion–shopping for anything is always good, especially when you get a #5 afterwards!

7. Pizza, Play-Doh, and coloring with Annabelle

8. The $15 dollar ice level seats to see the Roanoke Express (This is only cheap if you don’t have to buy an $80 battery beforehand…)

9. The park

10. People watching at the Wal-Mart, where Cletus and Claudine’s abound

Hope this sparks some of you to take your lady out for a night of some real entertainment. We simple chicks love this stuff.
